The Craft of Sport explores heritage and authenticity through the lens of making. Drawing inspiration from adidas’ founder, Adi Dassler, the concept reflects a deep respect for precision, experimentation, and hands-on innovation.

This idea of craftsmanship is echoed through parallels with Japanese denim and indigo traditions, where skill, time, and process elevate simple materials into objects of cultural value.

The moodboard brings together sport and craft, performance and artistry, creating a dialogue between function and expression. The concept speaks to a discerning, style-led consumer who values authenticity, narrative depth, and longevity over mass appeal.

The result is a sportswear lifestyle proposition that feels considered, human, and timeless — rooted in heritage while relevant to contemporary culture.

This reference set brings together adidas’ sporting heritage with a broader culture of craft, restraint, and authenticity. Influences range from early performance innovation under Adolf Dassler to contemporary expressions of street and workwear, where material honesty and functional detail define value.

Natural indigo, garment dye, and heritage cotton constructions establish a tactile foundation, while understated graphics and archival sportswear cues reinforce a sense of purpose over decoration.

Together, these references inform a design language rooted in longevity, cultural relevance, and everyday wearability.

Fabric

Material choices prioritise tactility, durability and natural ageing.

The fabric direction for The Craft of Sport balances performance innovation with authentic heritage craft. Natural cotton constructions form the foundation, chosen for tactility, durability, and their ability to age with character over time.

Unbroken twills, slub jerseys, and loopwheel fleece introduce surface depth and irregularity, referencing both early American sportswear and Japanese artisanal production.

Ventile cotton adds weather protection without compromising softness or wearability, reinforcing utility-led design. Trim and graphic details remain purposeful and understated.

Copper hardware, discharge prints, and textured finishes anchor the collection in craftsmanship, ensuring materials support both function and narrative rather than decoration.

Colour

A restrained palette balancing heritage blues with softened neutrals.

The colour direction for The Craft of Sport is built around heritage blues and softened neutrals, creating a palette that feels both athletic and crafted. At its core is Aditone Blue, a modern expression of adidas’ sporting legacy, balanced with deeper indigo tones that reference denim, workwear, and archival track silhouettes.

These blues provide depth and continuity across categories, anchoring the collection in familiarity and authenticity. Supporting neutrals of light heather, chalk white, and stone introduce balance and breathability, allowing layering and material texture to take focus.

The palette is intentionally restrained, designed to work across garments, graphics, and trims without overpowering form or fabrication. Together, the colours reinforce a quiet confidence where performance meets craft, delivering a timeless foundation that feels considered, versatile, and grounded.

Key silhouette

The silhouettes for The Craft of Sport balance archival sportswear with heritage workwear, creating a wardrobe that feels functional, timeless, and culturally grounded. The field jacket in dark indigo reflects utilitarian roots, drawing from military and outdoor influences while maintaining a clean, minimalist edge.

Paired with straight-cut raw denim, the look leans into Japanese craft traditions, emphasising durability and authenticity. Layered with this are vintage athletic sweats, featuring collegiate-style graphics and heathered tones. These pieces capture a nostalgic connection to American sports culture while offering the comfort and ease today’s consumer expects.

The inclusion of the adidas track top, with its sharp panel design and three-stripe identity, roots the collection firmly in the brand’s DNA, blending performance codes with lifestyle relevance. Together, these silhouettes highlight a narrative where craft and sport converge, offering a modular, everyday uniform for style leaders who value authenticity, versatility, and cultural storytelling.

Graphic direction for The Craft of Sport draws from adidas’s archival identity and the cultural language of craft.

Early Adidas marks and Olympic-era references anchor the story in performance heritage, recalling sport as both function and global culture.

These references are balanced with craft-led motifs inspired by Japanese mon-style iconography. Repetition, symbolism, and simplicity introduce a quieter, more considered graphic language, reinforcing ideas of precision, authenticity, and making.

Modern minimalism is expressed through restrained placement and gradient-based graphics, offering a contemporary counterpoint to bold heritage marks.

Together, these elements create a graphic system that feels purposeful rather than decorative, connecting adidas’ origins with a modern lifestyle.

Cheat sheet

A distilled framework defining the core creative, material, and cultural codes of the collection.

This cheat sheet consolidates the defining elements of The Craft of Sport into a clear, repeatable system. It captures the balance between heritage, craft, and performance that underpins the collection, ensuring consistency across product categories and segments.

The consumer is a style-led, culturally aware audience that values authenticity over excess. They are drawn to heritage brands, Japanese craftsmanship, and products with narrative depth — seeking pieces that feel considered, functional, and enduring rather than trend-driven.

Colour centres on Aditone Blue and Dark Indigo, supported by softened neutrals to create a palette that is both grounded and versatile.

Graphic language connects adidas’ founder legacy with craft-led symbolism, blending archival marks with restrained modern execution.

Silhouettes are rooted in utility and archival sportswear, designed for modular everyday wear. Fabric choices prioritise natural fibres, texture, and durability, while trims and finishes reinforce the story of craft through subtle, purposeful detail. Together, these elements form a clear design recipe that translates concept into a coherent range.

Form

Developing silhouette, proportion, and functional structure.

Key proportion and graphic placement refined through iterative sketch development.

The sweatshirt silhouette reinterprets an archival adidas crew through a modern, lifestyle lens.

Proportion was carefully adjusted to create a relaxed yet controlled fit, balancing everyday wearability with a premium, considered stance.

Raglan sleeve construction enhances movement and comfort while referencing classic athletic forms. Rib depth, collar shape, and body length were refined to ensure the garment layers easily and maintains structure over time.

The placement of the Adolf Dassler Sportschuhe graphic was calibrated to feel confident but restrained, allowing heritage branding to lead without overpowering the form.

The final result is a familiar sportswear icon, refined for contemporary lifestyle use where archival identity, comfort, and longevity are brought into clear alignment.

This look brings adidas archival sportswear into a modern lifestyle context.

Classic track shapes are softened through proportion, fabric choice, and layering to create an outfit suited to daily movement rather than performance alone.

The track jacket anchors the look, using colour blocking and three-stripe detailing to reference adidas heritage.  Raw indigo denim grounds the outfit, adding durability and cultural weight, while canvas accessories reinforce a utilitarian, honest approach to styling.

The result is a familiar sportswear uniform, refined through proportion and material choice. Designed for daily wear, it moves easily between city life and casual sport while maintaining clarity of brand and intent.

Colour addition

An alternative warm palette grounded in utility and earth tones.

Alongside the core blue story, an additional colour key introduces a warmer, utility-led direction. Olive, field green, and softened khaki tones offer an alternative expression rooted in workwear and military heritage, shifting the mood from sport archive to everyday utility.

This palette provides flexibility for consumers who prefer a more grounded, natural aesthetic while retaining alignment with adidas’ functional DNA. Greens replace indigo as the anchor tone, supported by light heather, chalk white, and muted stone to maintain balance and wearability.

The result is a complementary colour option that broadens the collection’s appeal without diluting its point of view.  Performance codes remain intact, while the warmer palette delivers a quieter, more utilitarian expression of The Craft of Sport.

Key Look 02 shifts the collection away from archival blue into a warmer, utility-led direction. Olive and field green anchor the look, drawing from military surplus and workwear traditions while maintaining a relaxed sportswear attitude.

The silhouette layers lightweight outerwear with soft jersey and sweat components, balancing structure  with comfort. Neutral greys and chalk whites soften the palette and support easy, everyday wear, while canvas accessories and knit socks reinforce a practical, honest styling approach.

This look offers an alternative entry point into The Craft of Sport. It retains adidas’ performance DNA but delivers a calmer, more grounded lifestyle expression suited to daily movement and urban use.

From concept to range

Translating a hero idea into a scalable seasonal system

Adidas_Task_COS.001.jpeg

The Craft of Sport began with a single point of view and evolved into a cohesive seasonal range.

The focus was on building a system, not isolated products, allowing the concept to scale across outerwear, tops, bottoms, and jersey with clarity and consistency.

Material language, colour balance, and functional hierarchy guide the range.

Core silhouettes repeat with controlled variation, creating familiarity across categories while supporting multiple wear occasions.

The result is a structured assortment that balances heritage, function, and everyday wearability.
